Earthquake Recovery Info

Dear Parents:

Please read the attached waiver request from the California Department of Education on behalf of the Calexico Unified School District to the federal government in regards to exemption from required state testing as a result of the earthquake recovery period.

The parent hotline for earthquake related questions has been closed.  Calls made to the hotline number are now forwarded to the main district telephone number.   CUSD would like to thank teachers and staff that answered the parent hotline calls over the last few weeks.  A special thanks goes to Bill Hodge from Calexico High School for his good ideas and for helping to coordinate the hotline.

  • CUSD is inviting the community to a celebration of our schools reopening.
    • Friday, May 7 at Crummett Park and 8th street.
    • 6:00 – 10:00 pm
    • School dance and band ensembles, local rock and Latin bands, family activities and more. 
  • 10 school sites reopened this week. 
  • Calexico High School will reopen pending completion of the asbestos removal. 
  • High school graduation ceremony and senior activities continue as scheduled. 
  • Reopening of Jefferson School will be announced at a later date. 

Here is the complete update of the district’s progress.

CUSD issued a press release (English and Spanish) with updates for the community:

  • Most schools reopened on May 5.  Calexico High School and Jefferson School are tentatively scheduled to reopen on the week of May 10.
  • A School Site Safety Clearance was issued by a DSA inspector (Division of State Architect).  This clearance has been posted at each site.
  • Repairs and asbestos abatement continue at Calexico High School and Jefferson School.
  • CUSD is inviting the community to a celebration of our schools reopening.

Ten of the 12 CUSD schools affected by the April 4 earthquake will reopen on Wednesday, May 5.  "We hope to resume classes at Calexico High on May 10 and to finalize plans for Jefferson Elementary later this week," said Dr. Luna.  Food services will be provided for Calexico High School and Jefferson Elementary School students at the Calexico Community Center.  Here is the press release (English  Spanish)with more information.   

  • CUSD held it’s first Parent Drop-in Center.  6,413 of 9,332 enrolled students received educational packets.
  • Contractors have been employed and repairs have begun on school site repairs.
  • Maintenance and Operations staff and school site custodians  have been working together with contractors to clean up our schools.
  • Asbestos removal from 3 sites is temporarily suspended by the contractors due to high winds.
  • Testing and monitoring for asbestos will continue to ensure student and staff safety.

The Calexico Unified School District is working quickly to recover, rebuild and reopen schools.  A flyer has been prepared to keep everyone up to date about the district’s progress.  An handout to accompany the flyer gives details about the conditions of each school site and describes the progress being made toward reopening schools.

  • Contractors should begin work on damage repairs next week (week of April 26, 2010)
  • Enrique Camarena Junior High School students will remain at their school
  • Options are still being considered for Jefferson Elementary School students and staff
  • Schools will remain closed next week
